Cliff House Hotel joined Relais&Chateaux last year after being a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World the first year of their operation. My experience started with a pick up at the nearest bus stop 20 kilometres away. The welcome went very quick and the general manager Adriaan Bartels greeted me. He also escorted me to the room which was very unconventional for a Relais&Chateaux. Very modern design as seen throughout the hotel. The bathroom being the highlight with raining shower and freestanding bathtub. The large flatscreen Tv, comfortable bed and sea view were other nice touches as well as the handwritten welcome card.
In terms of design Cliff House Hotel felt more like a SLH-property than a Relais&Chateaux that tend to be quite old school. It didn’t feel like a Relais&Chateaux in that sense, but definitely had the charme which is one of the 5 C’s. Their 1 star Michelin restaurant was closed so I had dinner in their casual restaurant. It was good, but I expected more from a Relais&Chateaux although you have to judge the experience on the Michelin restaurant. The facilities included a very nice spa with it’s own reception. I enjoy a the swimming pool which is huge compared to the size of the hotel. Also, the hotel has unique activities like a golf hole The most important thing is always the service and it’s definitely not perfect, but not bad either. Some staff were excellent, others could need more training. The attention to detail was good, but some staff were quite new and I’m sure it will be better when you book a stay later on after reading this review.
