La Residence Phou Vao by Orient-Express

Orient-Express is one of my favourite hotel brands for many reasons. The main reason is that every hotel is up to a high standard and that all hotels have it’s charachter. Something I miss from chains like Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental which can be quite similar experiences.

After a great experience with La Residence in Camobodia I arrived in La Residence Lao Phao with high expectations. As soon as I arrived the receptionist came up and greeted me by name and escorted me to the front disk where a nice welcome drink was served. After a short talk with their Spanish hotel manager I was escorted to my Junior Suite which had a nice classical design. The design was quite similar to La Residence in Siem Reap, but this had a nice outdoor relaxation area. I couldn’t complain about the suite, but the Tv for sure needs to be replaced or removed. A flatscreen Tv was neccesary in 2011 or to save money you can remove it and bring it upon request because only a few guests needs a Tv in a location like Luang Prabang.

The first impressions of the service were very good, and it continued throughout my stay. Their English level was acceptable, and they delivered really good service as expected from an Orient-Express. I had a look at their spa, and it’s very beautiful treatment rooms. However, I can’t comment on the quality as I didn’t have a treatment myself. The swimming pool is nice, and the pool boy takes good care of the guest with water and fruits. Overall it was a nice Orient-Express experience, but there is also things to improve. I stayed here for my birthday, but they didn’t mentioned that at all. Furthermore it was the first Orient-Express without a welcome card which I think is an important detail. This hotel is highly recommended on Tripadvisor and I understand why. I would recommend it too, but not as much as Amantaka and Satri House.

My opinion: Great experience.
