Mount Nelson Hotel

Orient-Express is one of my favourite hotel brands, and all their hotels look amazing. After a great stay in The Westcliff in Johannesburg, I arrived at the Mount Nelson Hotel with expectations of a similar experience. Mount Nelson has been called the flagship of Africa as it’s a very historic hotel with a history back to 1899.

The first impressions are always very important to have an unforgettable experience. Mount Nelson Hotel must be one of the best arrival experiences I’ve had. The gate with Mount Nelson Hotel and beautiful palm trees before you arrive in the lobby is excellent made. As in Cape Grace, they serve a welcome drink while you check in. You will have the choice of water or ice tea before they escort you to your room. I stayed in a Garden Cottage Suite which is the second highest category of suites, and it was fantastic. Beautiful living room and perhaps the best bedroom I have ever seen. The special pink design which gives you the true feeling of Mount Nelson. The facilities are great as well and now even have a spa.

The most important thing in a hotel is always the service, and Mount Nelson Hotel exceeded all my expectations. Strong name recognition and great young people at the front desk made this a world class experience. Their restaurant Planet has recently refurbished for 5 million rands, and it looks fantastic. I had dinner there, and both service and food were outstanding. Ask for Chef Rudi Liebenberg’s tasting menu. It’s out of this world. The restaurant manager Andreas have got to be the most professional I’ve seen. I wish I could receive such service on a daily basis in the world’s best hotels.

Overall this was the best hotel experience I’ve had in Africa. It’s a hotel with history, character and outstanding service. I can’t recommend it enough, and I can’t wait for my return to Cape Town.

My opinion: Fantastic experience.
