Sun Island Maldives is the biggest resort in The Maldives with 350 rooms and part of the Villa Hotels chain which also includes Royal Island, Paradise Island, Holiday Island and Fun Island. Of the 350 rooms total 72 are Water Bungalows, 4 are Presidential Suites, 218 Beach Bungalows and 60 Deluxe Beach Bungalows. I had a site inspection of all categories and there is no doubt the accommodation is very average. The main problem is that it’s old and need a renovation. That being said, small details such as flatscreen Tv’s helps. On the positive note, the service at Sun Island was better than I expected it to be and because of the size of the island, it feels a bit like a corporate resort. I also found the food to be better than Royal Island and especially Paradise Island which was nice to see as I was very disappointed with the food at the other Villa Hotels I stayed, I am sorry to say.
Sun Island has very attractive summer rates and makes it possible to experience The Maldives on a budget and still have a great experience. It’s far from the level of The Maldives top resorts, but then again, you really have to look at the rate difference. Some resorts in The Maldives unfortunately still charges for internet, but Sun Island has complimentary internet available at a few public areas and its far enough for a call home.
Overall I had a short, but pleasant stay at Sun Island. I am not a big fan of the rooms, but everything else isn’t far from most of the mid-priced resorts in The Maldives. Some people like big resorts as they don’t get too much attention and Sun Island is great for that. A very good resort for people on a budget in The Maldives, while discerning travelers should stay elsewhere.
My opinion: Good experience.
